Christmas Eve 2103 will surely be a Christmas to remember amongst the many Christmas Eves which the small island of St. Lucia has experienced. The unexpected trough which hit the island of St. Lucia at approximately 1:30 pm caused mass destruction to the island leading to the death of six persons and causing floods, damage to roads, bridges, schools and homes. This sudden catastrophe left many persons homeless, having churches and schools to be their only option of shelter. Water pipes and electrical posts were also damaged leaving the island without water or current for about one to two weeks.
Fortunately for some persons the Vieux Fort Children's Society donated food and clothing to persons who lost their homes and were sheltering at schools and churches. This donation went a long way for these persons seeing that they had little or nothing. Other donations were also made to assist the country in its time of need.
After the Christmas holiday and even on Christmas Day persons were not able to practice the usually Christmas traditions instead they were busy cleaning up and trying to repair roads and homes. It took the island about three to four weeks to get back into a stable but not normal condition. This sudden trough was only seen by God and the island of St. Lucia and other affected islands which experienced it would never be the same. St. Lucia I very grateful for the help which was given to them in their time if need. - Nichola P. Cox
